Welcome to the Florida Chapter
of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers

Welcome to our website.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers was founded in 1962 by attorneys involved with family law.  The purpose of the Academy is to encourage the study and improve the practice of Family Law as well as to elevate the standards of those attorneys practicing in that area of law with the goal of protecting families and society.

The Florida Chapter of the Academy works to further these goals by its involvement in encouraging appropriate legislation toward these ends, conducting a three day annual Institute where lawyers from around the State learn of cutting edge strategies for handling their cases and by the Chapter’s significant charitable donations to improve the teaching of Family Law in the various law schools of the State.

There are only seventy five lawyers in the State of Florida who are Fellows in the Academy.  Membership is difficult to obtain.  First, the lawyer must become Board Certified by the Supreme Court of Florida in the field of Marital and Family Law.  This requires proof of substantial courtroom experience in Family Law trials.  The judges and attorneys in the applicant’s hometown then comment upon the ethics and competence of the applicant.  Finally, the applicant must pass a day long, difficult written examination as to Florida Family Law in order to become Board Certified.

Once Board Certified, the lawyer may apply to become a Fellow in the Academy.  This involves another peer review (this time with emphasis on whether the attorney is a “part of the solution” rather than a “part of the problem” with regard to resolving Family Law disputes), a written examination as to national and international Family Law issues, and finally, an oral examination with regard to the practice of Family Law in Florida.  Only upon successful completion of these steps is an attorney accepted in the Academy.

If you are a lawyer reading this, we hope that you will consider aspiring to these  goals and joining our Chapter.

If you are in search of legal representation in a Family Law matter, we hope that you will consider consulting a lawyer with the unique credentials of our members.

Thank you for visiting our website.
